Breathe Easy
Your Guide to Natural, Breathable Fabrics
A small shift in knowledge can make a big difference in how you shop, how you feel, and how you support your body's natural wellness. This guide is your go-to reference for understanding breathable natural fibres, reading retail tags with confidence, and making choices that align with a healthier, more intentional lifestyle.
🌿 Quick Tip: Look for certifications like OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) on hang tags — these signal that a fabric has been tested for harmful substances and meets rigorous health and environmental benchmarks.
The Big Three: Breathable Natural Fibres Worth Knowing
These three fibres represent the best of what the retail market currently offers for breathable, health-conscious dressing. Learn to recognize them — and seek them out.
We believe the pieces you wear most should feel the best. That’s why Maison Sarava collections feature elevated blends of cotton, Lyocell, and modal chosen for softness, breathability, and long-lasting comfort.
🌲 Lyocell (TENCEL™)
The modern sustainability hero. Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fibre derived from wood pulp — most commonly eucalyptus, beech, or oak. The most recognized brand name is TENCEL™, developed by Lenzing AG. What makes lyocell exceptional is its closed-loop production process: up to 99% of the solvent used in manufacturing is recovered and reused, dramatically reducing environmental impact compared to conventional fabric production.
- Breathability: Outstanding — moves moisture away from the body rapidly
- Feel: Silky smooth, incredibly soft — often compared to silk or cashmere
- Skin Benefits: Naturally antibacterial; reduces odour; ideal for acne-prone or reactive skin
- Eco Score: One of the most responsibly produced fibres on the market
🪵 Modal
The everyday luxe fibre. Modal is another wood-pulp-derived fibre, typically made from beech trees. It is often described as 50% more absorbent than cotton and retains its softness wash after wash without pilling. TENCEL™ Modal by Lenzing is the gold standard, produced with traceable beech forests certified by the Rainforest Alliance. It's a go-to for intimate apparel, activewear, and loungewear precisely because of its skin-like drape.
- Breathability: Very high — lightweight weave allows excellent ventilation
- Durability: Resists shrinkage; holds colour vibrantly; long garment life
- Skin Feel: Ultra-soft, non-scratchy; suitable for all skin types including eczema-prone
- Certifications: Look for OEKO-TEX and TENCEL™ branding to verify responsible sourcing
🌾 Cotton
The original breathable fibre. Cotton has been used for over 7,000 years, and for good reason. Its natural hollow fibres allow air to circulate freely, making it one of the most breathable options available in any retail store. Organic cotton — certified by GOTS or labeled Organic — is grown without synthetic pesticides, making it a significantly cleaner option for your skin and the planet.
- Breathability: Excellent — open weave allows full airflow
- Moisture: Absorbs well, though slower to dry than modal or lyocell
- Skin Comfort: Hypoallergenic; ideal for sensitive skin
- Sustainability: Conventional cotton is water-intensive; always opt for organic or recycled
