Why We Started Maison Sarava
We didn't set out to open a clothing store. We set out to solve a problem we kept running into ourselves — the frustrating gap between what clothing claims to be and what it actually is. The certifications that exist but aren't displayed. The supply chains that are traceable but never shared. The manufacturers doing genuinely good work, quietly, with no platform to reach the people who would care most.
We spent years travelling and seeing options that simply weren't available in Canada. Maison Sarava is the result — a carefully edited store built on one principle: we only carry what we can fully stand behind. Not what photographs best. What holds up, what's made responsibly, and what we'd buy ourselves.
Every brand in our edit has been vetted for supply chain transparency, fibre integrity, and manufacturing accountability. We hold the certifications. We've read the documentation. And when you ask us where something comes from, we can tell you — because we already know.
What "Better" Actually Looks Like
Better means supply chain transparency — knowing where a fibre was grown, how it was processed, and what certifications the manufacturer holds. It means OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, which tests finished garments for over 100 harmful substances. It means FSC®-certified wood sourcing for cellulosic fibres like lyocell. It means a brand that can show you the paperwork, not just tell you a story.
Better also means construction you can feel. Fabric weight that has intention behind it. Stitching that doesn't pull at the first wash. Silhouettes cut to move with a body, not just hang on a hanger. Garments measure to the millimetre.
And — critically for online shoppers — better means a brand that stands behind what it sells. Because the one genuine limitation of buying quality clothing online is that you can't feel it before it arrives. A generation of venture-backed "sustainable basics" brands promised a better way to shop — and for a while, it felt like they delivered. But as customer acquisition costs climbed, many found themselves spending millions just to stay visible. The product became secondary to the marketing budget. The story was the product. So in the end, was it sustainable?
The gap left by the closure of Hudson's Bay is real — and the answer isn't another national chain. It's a locally owned store that knows its customers by name, stands behind every product it carries.
Maison Sarava is not a startup chasing scale. We are not backed by venture capital, and we are not dependent on a $20M marketing budget to manufacture authenticity. What we have instead is something harder to replicate: European manufacturing partners with decades of expertise, heritage production dating back to 1973, and family-owned suppliers who have been making the same things — exceptionally well — for longer than most fast fashion brands have existed.
